The PhD program of the METU Department of Civil Engineering aims for its graduates to acquire the following knowledge, skills, and attitudes upon completion of their studies:

  1. Conducts independent research to investigate and solve advanced civil engineering problems using appropriate scientific methods and acquires the fundamental knowledge to evaluate the results.
  2. Critically reviews and synthesizes relevant literature to identify the current state of the art and research gaps.
  3. Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth while adapting to advancements in the field.
  4. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and applies fundamental principles in specific areas of civil engineering to analyze and solve advanced-level problems.
  5. Conducts innovative research that makes a novel contribution to the literature.
  6. Poses research questions in relation to gaps in the literature and proposes a research plan based on scientific methodology.
  7. Acquires the ability to publish research findings as articles in international scientific journals.
  8. Communicates effectively in written and oral forms, particularly in conveying research processes and outcomes to diverse audiences.
  9. Upholds professional and ethical responsibility in research, with an awareness of global, societal, environmental, and scientific contexts.
